This entry is about recognizing real leadership when you see it and understanding its impact long after the moment passes.
This entry isn’t just about a moment, it’s about a standard.
From my days consulting with Nike / Jordan Brand, being brought into rooms I hadn’t yet earned on paper, to watching how decisions around culture were actually made, this story centers around Drew Greer; someone who didn’t just operate in the system, but challenged it when it mattered.
A leader who didn’t just participate in the system, but challenged it when it drifted away from the people it was supposed to represent.
I share the moment I saw what true leadership in this world looks like under pressure, when protecting the culture meant speaking uncomfortable truths in rooms full of influence.
That moment became an altering blueprint and shifted my perspective on how I would now approach business, leadership, and accountability moving forward.
This is also about mentorship; not the surface-level kind, but the type that sharpens your thinking, prepares you for rooms you think you're not ready for, and stays with you even when life takes unexpected turns. Mentorship that checks you, and stays consistent even when the spotlight fades.
More than anything, this story is about standards. The kind that doesn't change depending on the room, the title, or the moment.
Because some people don’t just impact your career; they reshape how you move for the rest of your life. Real ones don’t just help you get in the room…..
…… They change how you move once you’re in it.
The OG Uncle Drew
I wrote this the day after Christmas last year.
I was going through some tough thoughts on how things had been going and I happen to see a few posts on LinkedIn from a mentor who didn't even realize he had been doing so for years from afar.
I think one of my longer entries to date.
