Sport has always been a central part of my life. Competing as an athlete taught me discipline, teamwork, and the mindset required to push beyond limits.
Those lessons continue to shape how I approach leadership, creativity, and product design.
Like many people I grew up with, sports were a constant presence in my life. They challenged me, grounded me, and taught me how to compete while respecting the process of growth.
Over time, I realized the same mindset that drives athletes also drives creativity and innovation.

Football taught me resilience and leadership.
Every play requires commitment, strategy, and the ability to push through
adversity with the team around you.
Those lessons remain a foundation for how I lead, build, and create today.

Baseball has always represented patience and precision for me.
The game rewards preparation and focus, teaching the importance of timing, discipline, and long-term thinking.
Those lessons continue to influence how I approach both leadership and creative work.

Basketball introduced me to the power of teamwork and creativity in motion.
The pace of the game requires quick decisions, awareness, and trust in those around you.
That same energy often shows up in the collaborative nature of product creation.

Before anything I’ve built, before any title I’ve held, before any room I’ve walked into…
I’ve always been their father first.
Everything I do starts there..even when they didn't think so.
Because they’re watching.
Not just what I say, but how I move.
How I respond when things don’t go my way.
How I treat people.
How I handle pressure, setbacks, and mistakes.
I never forced them into sports or judged them if they didn't want to participate. I only encouraged them.
Because whether they chose organized sports or not, I already knew what it was going to be…
....there was always going to be competition in this house.
Dodgeball. Basketball. Tennis. Anything.
We compete.
And every single one of them has it in them.
And through all of it, sports became more than just something we did…
....it became one of the ways we connected.
Watching them growup and go through certain trials and tribulations a Father wants to protect his children from ....
....I am often reminded me of the same lessons I learned growing up…
Discipline, perseverance, teamwork.
Because competition teaches you something quick…
you’re not always going to win.
Sometimes you lose because someone was just better that day.
Sometimes you lose because of your own decisions.
I’ve had both.
There have been moments where I got it right… and moments where I didn’t.
Moments where I could’ve been better as a father. Better in how I showed up. Better in what I said or didn’t say.
That’s just an honest self reflection I think about often. as a Dad.
But just like in sports… you don’t stay down.
You learn. You adjust. You come back.
And that’s why I’ve always believed… sports are never just games.
You can't think I'm old school or whatever, but to those who say out loud during competition "it's only a game" I know it's someone I can't trust in life. to give it their all.
Competition mirrors life in many ways & how you react, persevere or simply give up says more about you than it does the person who knows they may not be gifted or good on a basic level, but they keep fighting & working to accomplish the win.
Sports and competition is are training grounds for leadership, character, and resilience.
I’m far from a perfect father.
Never claimed to be.
But one thing that’s never been in question… I love my kids unconditionally.
And from the moment each one of them got here… everything I’ve done has been for them.
Even when they didn't think so.

My oldest. Always been wired different.
Laid back on the surface, but there’s a quiet discipline in how he moves.
He understands his strengths, respects his limits, and competes with intention.
Some people see the intelligence first… and they’re not wrong. At 7 years old, he told me he wanted to be an aeronautical engineer.
I was still trying to figure out how he even knew what that meant.
But what they miss is the effort.
Whatever he steps into, he gives it everything.

My 6' 10 student of the game.
Football inadvertently chose his path, as basketball became his language.
High IQ, high motor, and a deep understanding of how to play the right way.
Played Division I ball. Could’ve gone further… and that’s not just me talking. I’ve always kept it real with him.
Graduated early during the pandemic. Master’s in International Business.
Disciplined. Focused. Built for whatever he decides to chase.

Always been in motion.
Since she was little, if there was space in front of us, she was racing me… yelling “set-go” before I even had a chance.
That same energy led her to cross country, where she found her rhythm.
She’s creative in a way you can’t teach.
Can draw something so real it feels like a photograph. Plays guitar. Sings between classes. Lives free.
Calls herself a hippie… but she’s grounded in her own way.
Took a year to find her path, then walked right into it.

Quiet storm.
Never cared for organized sports. Didn’t force it. She stood ten toes on it.
But competition? It’s in her.
One day, out of nowhere, she stepped into a game with us… picked up a bat for the first time… and started hitting everything like she’d been doing it her whole life.
Power. Precision. Natural.
Then walked away afterwards like it was nothing.
That’s her.
Doesn’t need attention. Doesn't want it. Doesn’t chase validation.
Just shows up when she feels like it… and reminds you.

Naturally gifted. Fully aware of it.
For a while, he thought he’d be the smallest of the group. I told him to be patient.
Then the growth came.
Plays everything well. Sees the game fast. Loves competition.
Not shy about telling you he’s good either… we’re refining that part.
Locked in on basketball right now, chasing the next level.
Smart, athletic, confident.
Things come easy to him so I have to make sure he doesn't let the Parrish temper ever derail him.

Always by my side.
If you saw me during my radio and TV days… chances are he was right there with me.
Sitting in rooms, listening, absorbing.
Taught himself early. ABCs, numbers… all of it before Pre-K
But what stands out most is his toughness.
Poor Coaching put him in a position he had no business being in during a football game.
Took hit after hit… got knocked down over and over.
And every single time… he got back up.
That told me everything I needed to know about him.

When I was about 10 years old, I asked my dad for a jersey.
Not the biggest name. Not the most popular one.
I wanted Rick “Doc” Walker.
There was something about him, how he spoke, how he carried himself, how he played that felt real.
You didn’t need hype to understand who he was.
Years later, before I ever stepped into radio, I used to listen to Doc alongside another Redskins great Brian Mitchell and legendary Georgetown Coach John Thompson.
Three true leaders in one room, strong voices, but no egos. They listened. They respected each other.
They made space for wisdom.
Without realizing it, I was studying.
A few months into my own radio career, Doc came up to me at a Redskins appearance and told me he loved the show and he was proud of me.
That moment stayed with me. Not just because of who he was, but because I knew he meant it.
One thing anyone knows about Rick Doc Walker is he doesn't blow smoke unless it's a cigar.
That was the beginning of a mentorship and a real friendship.
What stood out to me most about Doc?
It wasn’t just about the wisdom he often dropped about sports or life or when he shared valuable nuggets when it came to business.....
..... it was how he showed up.
In a business where people are often fake on air and disappear when you're no longer apart of it, Doc never did.
That’s something I carry with me to this day and will always appreciate about my man.
